GENERAL INFORMATION
Construction has been receiving a lot of investment not only from the government budget but also from many private corporations’ sources. Our country is also attracting many direct investment projects from abroad (FDI), including many large projects on infrastructure development, urban areas, industrial parks, properties, hotels, and resorts. Statistic data confirm that the construction sector contributes a fairly large proportion of Vietnam’s GDP. The Vietnamese construction market is valued at USD 57.52 billion in 2020, and the market is expected to reach USD 94.93 billion by 2026 with a growth rate of more than 8% in the forecast period from 2021 to 2026. The Vietnamese construction industry is the best-performing industry in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC). Therefore, the demand for human resources in the construction industry is very high in the coming years.
The Department of Civil Engineering of the Ho Chi Minh International University (HCMIU) was established in January 2011, mainly provided the educational service in the Construction Engineering major. Through constant development, in March 2021, the Construction Management major was officially allowed to recruit the first new batch of students meet the needs of society. By September 15, 2022, the SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT was established based on the existing manpower and facility of the Department of Civil Engineering according to the approved development strategy of the Interational University.
The goal of the School of Civil Engineering and Management is to provide students with solid and basic knowledge of engineering and management. Graduates of the School of Civil Engineering and Management are engineers with solid expertise with a high level of foreign languages, who are able to respond quickly to inclusive economic demands and are able to master advanced technologies in construction. In addition, with the characteristics of training entirely in English at the International University, the program will help students to be confident in the work in the field of construction, which needs a lot of communication with foreign partners.
Construction Engineering students will be equipped with:
- Having solid background knowledge.
- Knowledge of computer science, programming, and the ability to use specialized design software.
- In-depth knowledge in design, construction, and implementation of construction activities.
- Learning in English to meet the requirements of accessing and mastering new technologies in the design, construction, and implementation of construction activities.
- Ability to study post-graduate studies in Vietnam or advanced countries such as the U.S., Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, and Korea to pursue research or teaching.
Construction Management students will be equipped with:
- Having solid background knowledge.
- Knowledge of computer science and ability to use specialized software in the management of construction projects.
- In-depth knowledge related to volume measurement, cost estimation, project appraisal, bidding, settlement payment, cost management, and risk management in construction.
- Learning in English will respond quickly to negotiation, contracting, and communication in a construction environment.
- Ability to study post-graduate studies in Vietnam or advanced countries such as the U.S., Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, and Korea to pursue research or teaching.
TRAINING AGENDA
Designed according to the criteria of ABET Inc. (the U.S. technical education assessment agency) and the country’s need to promote creativity, teamwork, and self-study ability to pursue scientific research and leadership in engineering.
CAREERS
New graduate engineers from the School of Construction Engineering and Management can work in local and foreign construction enterprises. For example, enterprises and typical organizations in the field of transportation, irrigation, project management units, specialized research institutes, universities, colleges, and professional high schools. The demand in the construction sector in the period of innovation is enormous, so the job opportunities in the construction industry are extremely accessible for students who study at the Ho Chi Minh International University (HCMIU).
RESEARCH ORIENTATION
The School of Construction Engineering and Management focuses on advancing research on:
- Applying machine learning, artificial intelligence in structural design and construction management.
- Developing optimal solutions in the selection of construction materials for high-rise and low-rise buildings.
- Applying different mechanical calculation methods used for construction design.
- Applying probability theory in assessing the impacts on construction management efficiency: progress, cost, quality, labor safety, bidding, contracts, etc.
- Developing dynamic models to simulate the actual activities of the real estate market, risks, evaluate investment plans, road transport systems, etc.
- Optimizing construction project performance indicators.
- Assessing the feasibility of developing complex infrastructure projects
- Identifying potential risks affecting the implementation of smart infrastructure projects
- Developing building governance mechanisms for super complex projects
In addition, the School of Civil Engineering and Management positively and actively transfers research results and technology to enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding provinces.
